Common questions

I just purchased, but my license key says it's invalid

License keys can take a few minutes to become active after purchase. Wait a couple of minutes and try again, and make sure the key is pasted exactly as it appears in your receipt email. If it still fails, email us with the address you used at checkout.

Where is my license key?

It's in the receipt email from our payment provider, Lemon Squeezy, sent right after purchase. If you can't find it, check your spam folder, or email us and we'll look up your order.

Can I use my license on more than one Mac?

One license covers up to two Macs you personally own and use. If you've hit the limit (for example after replacing a machine), email us and we'll free up an activation.

The keyboard brightness flickers or pulses slightly at low levels

A small amount of fluctuation is normal and expected at sub-minimum levels. It's an inherent characteristic of how Midnight Keyboard holds the backlight below the macOS floor. It's usually imperceptible, but if it bothers you, nudge the slider one or two ticks higher for a sweet spot. See Known Issues for details.

I see a brief flash when changing levels

Expected. When switching between sub-minimum levels the backlight briefly resets before transitioning to the new level. It typically lasts less than half a second.

The backlight keeps changing on its own

That's macOS auto-brightness adjusting the keyboard with ambient light. Midnight Keyboard re-applies your sub-minimum offset when this happens, but if you'd rather have a fixed level, turn off "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" in System Settings → Keyboard.

What does Midnight Keyboard require?

Any Apple Silicon MacBook (M1 or later) with a backlit keyboard, running macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. Intel Macs and external keyboards are not supported.

How do I update the app?

Midnight Keyboard checks for updates automatically and offers them in-app. You can always get the latest version from the homepage; your license keeps working across updates.

My trial expired. What now?

The free trial lasts 3 nights (72 hours) and can't be extended. If it convinced you, a one-time purchase unlocks the app permanently.
